This proposed legislation would amend the Criminal Code to ensure that Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) is not extended to individuals whose sole underlying condition is mental illness. A vote is expected by mid-April 2026.

If the law is not amended, MAiD will become available for those suffering from mental illness alone beginning in March 2027.
